Drink from the Water

by M. J. Joachim

Terrified of disappointing the lady, Bernadette knelt down and started digging in the mud. Before long, a gentle stream bubbled up from which she was summoned to drink. Unashamed, she placed her face within the water for all the onlookers to see. Purposely, she chewed the weeds, grass and mud, drinking from the stream.

Everyone mocked her, calling her crazy and treating her like an outcast. Her own mother soon became embarrassed at the sight of her. Her father waited patiently, believing somehow her faithfulness would yield fruition.

Each day, Bernadette set out to meet the lady, heeding her instructions. Each day, a crowd followed her and watched her every move. Dazed, kneeling and looking up toward the top of the grotto, Bernadette prayed, asking the lady what she wanted.

Finally, quite unexpectedly, the lady answered. “I am the Immaculate Conception. You are to help establish devotion to my Immaculate Heart.”
