The Departure

by M. J. Joachim
Walking down the path, he stared in disbelief. Surely the intensity of his emotions did not lead him to this quantum field by accident. Drawn in, repelled by his anticipation to explore, he paused – but only for a moment.

She was real. He knew without exception. She was real again. The pain of losing her that fateful night, not knowing what had happened, pleading with anyone who might listen, “Where is my wife?! What’s happened to my wife?! Help me understand, please!!!”

Looking back was not an option. If he had, he might have seen his mother crying at his side. Six excruciating months, and nothing, not the slightest hint of recovery or life. He was brain dead. It was time to let him go.
